We're planning to expand to Wednesday afternoons very soon. For now, office hours are *offered at no charge*, but we have a donation jar at the desk. I encourage you to help us pay the rent and buy more coffee, lemonade, sodas and nuts by dropping a few dollars in the jar. $5 is a great start. (We love supporting and growing bridge in Pasadena, and we're starting to look forward to a time when the club can support itself and its managers, teachers, and directors for the long term. We know it will happen!) *"Office Hours" for casual bridge: Monday and Tuesday 3:00-5:00 PM.* Become a /Better Bridge/ Teacher Bridge needs teachers, and you could be part of the solution! Come hang out and play bridge. New courses coming

Pasadena Bridge Club Logo <https://pasadenabridgeclub.com> Learn and Play Bridge! Mojo ABTA Master Teacher 649 N Fair Oaks Ave #201 Pasadena CA 91103 (626) 247-4457 pasadenabridgeclub.com <https://pasadenabridgeclub.com> "We need to give people more opportunities to just play bridge," my partner Zachary said to me the other day. "Nothing takes the place of playing cards as much as you can." And then he made a remarkable offer. "Let's open the bridge club on Monday and Tuesday afternoons, 3:00-5:00 PM, for anyone and everyone to come in and play bridge. Nothing formal, just spend some time with the game. I'll be here." He didn't need to offer twice! No card fee for now, just come and play bridge. The more who come the better, of course. We always want to have a full table if we can! Jane suggested that it would be a great time to meet potential partners, or to bring a regular partner to try things and work out agreements. Let me know if you'd like to come, or if you'd just like to get reminders of our bridge "office hours." Great courses starting next Bridge Basics 2 - Competitive Bidding This is the second course in the Bridge Basics series. We discuss how the auction changes when both sides get into the bidding. If you're already playing regularly, this course will definitely level up your game! * Starts Thursday, October 12, 7:00-9:00 PM, six weeks * Full course description here <https://pasadenabridgeclub.com/course/competitive-bidding> * $115 includes textbook * Sign up for class here <https://pasadenabridgeclub.com/contact/course_enrollment> Intro to Declarer Play For "play of the hand" class, I'm switching to a favorite book, /Introduction to Declarer Play/ by Edwin Kantar, 2nd Edition, edited by Barbara Seagram. The book is a classic, fully updated, and fantastically easy to read. Like the book, the first three classes will be notrump play, and the second three suit contract play. I'm looking forward to a great fun course! * Starts Saturday, October 28, 9:30-11:30 AM, six weeks * Full course description here <https://pasadenabridgeclub.com/course/intro-to-declarer-play> * $115 includes textbook * Sign up for class here <https://pasadenabridgeclub.com/contact/course_enrollment> Two Over One Game Force Two Over One Game Force (2/1GF) is the modern bidding system based on Standard American 5-card Majors with a slight tweak. The adjustment makes it easier to find slams, or a better game contract, by giving the partnership more room on the bidding ladder. While 2/1GF is only slightly different from Standard American, it does come with its own idioms to become familiar with. Along with bidding, the course has dynamite hands to play and defend. Highly recommended for club and tournament players! * Starts Wednesday, November 8, 7:00-9:00 PM, six weeks * Full course description here <https://pasadenabridgeclub.com/course/two_over_one_game_force> * $125 includes textbook * Sign up for class here <https://pasadenabridgeclub.com/contact/course_enrollment> Next Bridge Introduction The next series of /Bridge Basics 1 - Introduction/ will be on Wednesday evenings, starting January 10. Look for it in the PCC Extension catalog landing in your mailbox sometime in early December. Best regards, Mojo

These three courses are "must take" for any bridge player ready to level-up their game! Bridge Basics 2 - Competitive Bidding This is only the second course in my recommended series of courses for new players, but the material is deep and will serve you for as long as you play the game. Check out the lesson topics: 1. Preemptive Opening Bids 2. Simple Overcalls and Advances 3. Takeout Doubles 4. The Competitive Auction The course finishes with two practice hand sessions that reinforce all of the material. More information at this link <https://pasadenabridgeclub.com/course/competitive-bidding>. * Six Saturday mornings, starting July 22, 9:30-11:30 AM * $115 includes textbook Defense This course may do more to improve your game results than anything else in the catalog! Learn how to work with your partner to find the missing cards at the table, and take the most tricks you can as defenders. For the full eight week lesson plan, follow this link <https://pasadenabridgeclub.com/course/defense>. * Eight Wednesday evenings, starting July 19, 7:00-9:00 PM * $130 includes textbook Two Over One Game Force Two Over One Game Force (or 2/1GF) takes Standard American 5-card Majors and makes one tiny tweak to the meaning of two-over-one bids (such as 1♠ - 2♦). The result is that it becomes easier to discover slam contracts, and find the right game contract. This is the system that I use with all of my tournament partners, and it's "must have" in your repertoire as an advancing player. For the full lesson plan, follow this link <https://pasadenabridgeclub.com/course/two_over_one_game_force>. * Six Thursday evenings, starting July 20, 7:00-9:00 PM * $140 includes the award-winning textbook by Grant and Rodwell Reserve your seat! Only pay if you decide to stay for the rest of the course! *And for your friends* who might be thinking of discovering the fascination of bridge, the next /Bridge Basics 1 - Introduction/ course will be held on Thursday evenings, starting August 31. As of this writing, I have 19 students enrolled! *This is a significant event* — it continues my decade-plus of collaboration with Pasadena City College to offer introductory bridge courses through their PCC Extension catalog. Many of you took classes from me on Wednesday evenings at Arcadia High School. Starting now, *these classes will be taught at the beautiful new Pasadena Bridge Club*. No more oversized round tables, walking to the bathrooms in the dark, hunting around to find the class room, or flashbacks from high school! *By the way *there's still time to join the May 14 all-day bridge seminar with Robert Todd. Drop me a note! Summer Wednesdays for Play and Defense Wednesday evenings at the Pasadena Bridge Club we're going to focus on your card play! We'll start with eight weeks of declarer play, and continue with eight weeks of defender play. Play of the Hand Add some precision and less guesswork to your declarer play by making a plan. Learn to maximize your probability of making contracts and taking all the tricks you can. It wouldn't be one of my courses without also including some bidding review, plus overcalls, takeout doubles, opening preempts, and the Stayman and Blackwood conventions! Suitable for bridge players of all experience levels, with each class presenting increasingly interesting declarer play problems! * Eight sessions * First class Wednesday May 24, 7-9 PM * $130 for all eight sessions, includes textbook * Single sessions available for $25 * See the full lesson plan <https://pasadenabridgeclub.com/course/play_of_the_hand> * Click here to enroll <https://pasadenabridgeclub.com/contact/course_enrollment> Defense This is one of the most intense and satisfying courses in the curriculum. Of course it covers the usual guidelines for the defenders. But more importantly it introduces how to think about defender play to solve the puzzle of each hand, working with your partner to maximize your tricks. Discover when following the guidelines will cause you to fail! This eight week course on defender play will follow the Play of the Hand class on Wednesday evenings. See the full lesson plan here <https://pasadenabridgeclub.com/course/defense>, and stay tuned for an exact start date. Popular Conventions Thursday AM We started the Bridge Basics series about three months ago on Thursday mornings with a great enthusiastic group of students. The series continues now with /Bridge Basics 3 - Popular Conventions/. Master the most useful bridge bidding conventions: Stayman, Jacoby Transfer Bids, Strong Opening Bids, and slam bidding conventions. * Thursday mornings, 9-11 AM, starting May 18 * Six sessions, $115, includes textbook ($25 single class) * Full lesson plan here <https://pasadenabridgeclub.com/course/popular-conventions> * Click here to enroll <https://pasadenabridgeclub.com/contact/course_enrollment> Play with a Pro! There are two opportunities coming up to play a full tournament-style bridge game with a partner who's a master player! In both events, your partner will be randomly assigned on the day of the game (no pre-arranged partnerships!) and you will have time to spend with him or her before and after the game to talk about all aspects of bridge. Monday July 3 This event kicks off the annual Bridge Week tournament in Long Beach. The day starts with a workshop by Grand Life Master Majorie Michelin, and the Pro-Am game at 1:00 PM. Register for the game by email at d23proam(a)gmail.com. Sunday July 23 This special game is called the Over/Under game where every partnership will be a newer player (under) and a master player (over). Game time will be 1:00 PM, with partnership meetings starting at 12:30. The game will be held at the Arcadia Bridge Center, and space is limited! Register using the form here: https://pasadenabridgeclub.com/contact/over_under_game Best regards, Mojo

I would consider doing an online course or coaching session again for those who might be interested. If that's you, drop me a note with what you'd like to do, and when would be the best time and day to do it. Meanwhile I have some great courses coming soon at the club in Pasadena: Robert Todd, May 14 Robert ToddThis full-day bridge seminar is not to be missed! Robert Todd is a bridge champion, teacher, author, and former math professor. His talks are notable for being accessible by new players, while having plenty of great stuff for experienced players as well. I never miss the opportunity to see him speak at a Nationals or regional tournament, and he's one of my mentors. The full day is $90, starting at 9:30. The course will meet on Saturday mornings at 9:30 AM starting May 20. We'll meet for six sessions, but skip May 27 (Memorial Day) and June 10 (Grand National Teams District Final). Register on the PCC Extension site at this link <https://pasadena.augusoft.net/index.cfm?method=ClassInfo.ClassInformation&i…>. Play of the Hand, May 24 This is a great course to follow the Bridge Basics series. Let's spend eight classes focused on planning and executing your plan when you're the declarer. The course meets for eight Wednesday evenings at 7:00, starting May 24. See the full description and lesson plan here: https://pasadenabridgeclub.com/course/play_of_the_hand Improving Your Judgment - Opening the Bidding, May 11 This course covers the subtleties of making an opening bid that we don't discuss in the Bridge Basics series. Your seating position relative to the dealer, vulnerability, and other factors will change how you evaluate your hand. As with all of the Better Bridge courses, you will also be introduced to play of the hand and defense techniques that you may not have seen before! The typical reaction from students of this course is that it exceeds all expectations. It's highly recommended for all regular club and aspiring tournament players. Meeting Thursday evenings at 7:00 PM, for six sessions, starting May 11. See the full lesson plan here: https://pasadenabridgeclub.com/course/iyj_opening Best regards, Mojo

Delaying start of Bridge Basics 3 - Popular Conventions
by Morris Jones 30 Mar '23

30 Mar '23

Hey all, on the calendar and newsletter I sent earlier this week I had /Bridge Basics 3 - Popular Conventions/ starting on Wednesday evening next week, April 5. I have a lot of students interested in taking the course, and everyone one of them reported that they would have to miss the first class. :) I'm guessing it's a combination of Passover, Easter week, maybe spring break, and other things. So the obvious thing to do is to postpone the start to Wednesday, April 12. For a full description of the course, see here: https://pasadenabridgeclub.com/course/popular-conventions We'll meet on Wednesday evenings, 7-9 PM, for six Wednesdays, starting April 12. Drop me a note if you'd like to join us!
