I'm returning next week from the American Bridge Teachers Association
convention in Chicago, and excited to get back to teaching this great
material in person at the beautiful Pasadena Bridge Club.
These three courses are "must take" for any bridge player ready to
level-up their game!
Bridge Basics 2 - Competitive Bidding
This is only the second course in my recommended series of courses for
new players, but the material is deep and will serve you for as long as
you play the game. Check out the lesson topics:
1. Preemptive Opening Bids
2. Simple Overcalls and Advances
3. Takeout Doubles
4. The Competitive Auction
The course finishes with two practice hand sessions that reinforce all
of the material. More information at this link
<https://pasadenabridgeclub.com/course/competitive-bidding>.
* Six Saturday mornings, starting July 22, 9:30-11:30 AM
* $115 includes textbook
Defense
This course may do more to improve your game results than anything else
in the catalog! Learn how to work with your partner to find the missing
cards at the table, and take the most tricks you can as defenders.
For the full eight week lesson plan, follow this link
<https://pasadenabridgeclub.com/course/defense>.
* Eight Wednesday evenings, starting July 19, 7:00-9:00 PM
* $130 includes textbook
Two Over One Game Force
Two Over One Game Force (or 2/1GF) takes Standard American 5-card Majors
and makes one tiny tweak to the meaning of two-over-one bids (such as 1♠
- 2♦). The result is that it becomes easier to discover slam contracts,
and find the right game contract.
This is the system that I use with all of my tournament partners, and
it's "must have" in your repertoire as an advancing player.
For the full lesson plan, follow this link
<https://pasadenabridgeclub.com/course/two_over_one_game_force>.
* Six Thursday evenings, starting July 20, 7:00-9:00 PM
* $140 includes the award-winning textbook by Grant and Rodwell
Reserve your seat!
Sign up for any of these classes by following this link

at the first class with cash, check, credit card, Apple Pay, or most
other electronic payment systems.
As always, single session class visits are always welcome for $25. And
if you're on the fence about any course, take the first class on me.
Only pay if you decide to stay for the rest of the course!
*And for your friends* who might be thinking of discovering the
fascination of bridge, the next /Bridge Basics 1 - Introduction/ course
will be held on Thursday evenings, starting August 31. Save the date!

The Bridge Basics series is starting again on Saturday May 20 with
/Bridge Basics 1 - Introduction/, 9:30-11:30. As of this writing, I have
19 students enrolled!
*This is a significant event* — it continues my decade-plus of
collaboration with Pasadena City College to offer introductory bridge
courses through their PCC Extension catalog.
Many of you took classes from me on Wednesday evenings at Arcadia High
School. Starting now, *these classes will be taught at the beautiful new
Pasadena Bridge Club*. No more oversized round tables, walking to the
bathrooms in the dark, hunting around to find the class room, or
flashbacks from high school!
*By the way *there's still time to join the May 14 all-day bridge
seminar with Robert Todd. Drop me a note!
Summer Wednesdays for Play and Defense
Wednesday evenings at the Pasadena Bridge Club we're going to focus on
your card play! We'll start with eight weeks of declarer play, and
continue with eight weeks of defender play.
Play of the Hand
Add some precision and less guesswork to your declarer play by making a
plan. Learn to maximize your probability of making contracts and taking
all the tricks you can.
It wouldn't be one of my courses without also including some bidding
review, plus overcalls, takeout doubles, opening preempts, and the
Stayman and Blackwood conventions!
Suitable for bridge players of all experience levels, with each class
presenting increasingly interesting declarer play problems!
* Eight sessions
* First class Wednesday May 24, 7-9 PM
* $130 for all eight sessions, includes textbook
* Single sessions available for $25
* See the full lesson plan

Defense
This is one of the most intense and satisfying courses in the curriculum.
Of course it covers the usual guidelines for the defenders. But more
importantly it introduces how to think about defender play to solve the
puzzle of each hand, working with your partner to maximize your tricks.
Discover when following the guidelines will cause you to fail!
This eight week course on defender play will follow the Play of the Hand
class on Wednesday evenings.
See the full lesson plan here
<https://pasadenabridgeclub.com/course/defense>, and stay tuned for an
exact start date.
Popular Conventions Thursday AM
We started the Bridge Basics series about three months ago on Thursday
mornings with a great enthusiastic group of students.
The series continues now with /Bridge Basics 3 - Popular Conventions/.
Master the most useful bridge bidding conventions: Stayman, Jacoby
Transfer Bids, Strong Opening Bids, and slam bidding conventions.
* Thursday mornings, 9-11 AM, starting May 18
* Six sessions, $115, includes textbook ($25 single class)

Play with a Pro!
There are two opportunities coming up to play a full tournament-style
bridge game with a partner who's a master player!
In both events, your partner will be randomly assigned on the day of the
game (no pre-arranged partnerships!) and you will have time to spend
with him or her before and after the game to talk about all aspects of
bridge.
Monday July 3
This event kicks off the annual Bridge Week tournament in Long Beach.
The day starts with a workshop by Grand Life Master Majorie Michelin,
and the Pro-Am game at 1:00 PM.
Register for the game by email at d23proam(a)gmail.com.
Sunday July 23
This special game is called the Over/Under game where every partnership
will be a newer player (under) and a master player (over). Game time
will be 1:00 PM, with partnership meetings starting at 12:30.
The game will be held at the Arcadia Bridge Center, and space is
limited! Register using the form here:

I know many of you aren't local to Pasadena, and I haven't been doing
any online courses for a while.
I would consider doing an online course or coaching session again for
those who might be interested. If that's you, drop me a note with what
you'd like to do, and when would be the best time and day to do it.
Meanwhile I have some great courses coming soon at the club in Pasadena:
Robert Todd, May 14
Robert ToddThis full-day bridge seminar is not to be missed! Robert Todd
is a bridge champion, teacher, author, and former math professor.
His talks are notable for being accessible by new players, while having
plenty of great stuff for experienced players as well. I never miss the
opportunity to see him speak at a Nationals or regional tournament, and
he's one of my mentors.
The full day is $90, starting at 9:30. The morning session will be on
slam bidding, and the afternoon on declarer play "Finesse and so much more."
Make reservations on RSVPBridge.com, or by responding to this email.
(You can pay in advance using R-Bucks on RSVPBridge if you like!)
Bridge Basics 1 - Introduction, May 20
Share this one with your non-bridge playing friends, or make plans to
revisit this wonderful "first course" of bridge.
The course will meet on Saturday mornings at 9:30 AM starting May 20.
We'll meet for six sessions, but skip May 27 (Memorial Day) and June 10
(Grand National Teams District Final).
This is the course many of you took through PCC at Arcadia High School.
it's still a PCC Extension class, but now we get to hold it at the
beautiful Pasadena Bridge Club.

Play of the Hand, May 24
This is a great course to follow the Bridge Basics series. Let's spend
eight classes focused on planning and executing your plan when you're
the declarer.
The course meets for eight Wednesday evenings at 7:00, starting May 24.
See the full description and lesson plan here:
https://pasadenabridgeclub.com/course/play_of_the_hand
Improving Your Judgment - Opening the Bidding, May 11
This course covers the subtleties of making an opening bid that we don't
discuss in the Bridge Basics series. Your seating position relative to
the dealer, vulnerability, and other factors will change how you
evaluate your hand.
As with all of the Better Bridge courses, you will also be introduced to
play of the hand and defense techniques that you may not have seen before!
The typical reaction from students of this course is that it exceeds all
expectations. It's highly recommended for all regular club and aspiring
tournament players.
Meeting Thursday evenings at 7:00 PM, for six sessions, starting May 11.

Hey all, on the calendar and newsletter I sent earlier this week I had
/Bridge Basics 3 - Popular Conventions/ starting on Wednesday evening
next week, April 5.
I have a lot of students interested in taking the course, and everyone
one of them reported that they would have to miss the first class. :)
I'm guessing it's a combination of Passover, Easter week, maybe spring
break, and other things.
So the obvious thing to do is to postpone the start to Wednesday, April 12.
For a full description of the course, see here:
https://pasadenabridgeclub.com/course/popular-conventions
We'll meet on Wednesday evenings, 7-9 PM, for six Wednesdays, starting
April 12. Drop me a note if you'd like to join us!

Spring Bridge Courses
Courses in the Bridge Basics series are continuing on Wednesday evenings

* Thursday mornings, 9-11 AM
* Starts April 6 for six Thursdays
* $115 includes text book
* More details and lesson plan here
<https://pasadenabridgeclub.com/course/competitive-bidding>
This course is dynamite for players at almost all levels. It's
especially valuable for learning to compete in the auction at duplicate
bridge games.
You'll learn ways to not only find productive contracts for your side,
but also make it more difficult for the opponents to land in their best
contract!
Bridge Basics 3 - Popular Conventions
* Wednesday evenings, 7-9 PM
* Starts April 5 for six Wednesdays
* $115 includes text book
* More details and lesson plan
<https://pasadenabridgeclub.com/course/popular-conventions>
Bridge players everywhere need a few basic conventions to get the most
out of the game. This class covers the Stayman convention, Jacoby
Transfer Bids, Strong Two-club Openings, and slam bidding with Blackwood.
Two Over One Game Force
* Saturday mornings, 9:30-11:30 AM
* Starts April 8 for five Saturdays (Skipping April 15)
* $120 includes text book
* More details and lesson plan
<https://pasadenabridgeclub.com/course/two_over_one_game_force>
Two Over One Game Force (abbreviated 2/1GF) is by far the most
successful and popular modern bidding system for club and tournament
players.
2/1GF is not a convention, but a slight adjustment to Standard American
that improves your ability to land in the correct game contract, plus
explore good slams, while avoiding bad ones.
The text is the awarding book by Audrey Grant and Eric Rodwell.
Social / Supervised Play Sessions
I currently have sessions on the calendar for unstructured social bridge
games on *Thursday evenings at 7:00* p.m., and *Saturday mornings at
9:30* a.m.
You're also invited to join us on *Thursdays at Noon* for an official
game, Novice Pairs. If we have at least eight players (two tables) we'll
play twelve boards for masterpoints!
And Save the Date
*Sunday May 14* is Mother's Day, but it's also the day for a full-day
bridge seminar with author, teacher, champion player, and one of my
mentors, *Robert Todd*. His seminars are always entertaining, and
fascinating for bridge players from newcomers to experts.
More details to come soon!
And the next iteration of /*Bridge Basics 1 - An Introduction*/ will
begin on Saturday mornings, May 20, 9:30 a.m. Pass the word to your
friends itching to learn to play!

There are a couple of courses starting soon that might pique your
interest! These courses are dynamite for regular club players who want
to level-up their game.
Defense!
How do you work with your partner to take all the tricks you can? The
defenders are at a huge disadvantage at the table! Declarer can play
with two hands, while you and your partner can't see each other's cards.
This course works through all the common defense aphorisms, like "third
hand high" and "cover an honor with an honor." We look at why they're
usually true, and more importantly when they might be the wrong thing to do.
The course runs on eight Thursday evenings, from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.,
starting March 9. For a lesson plan and more information, drop by here:
https://pasadenabridgeclub.com/course/defense
Improving Your Judgment - Doubles
The start of this course was postponed one week because of the rain
storms, but we still have plenty of time for five great sessions.
We'll look in detail at takeout doubles, advancing, doubler's rebid, as
well as seldom visited topics like balancing doubles.
The course runs on Saturday mornings, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m., for five
Saturdays. The first class is in two days, March 4.
Lesson plan and more information can be found here:
https://pasadenabridgeclub.com/course/iyj_doubles
Social / Supervised Play Sessions
If you'd like to enjoy a little unstructured time playing bridge hands,
be sure to join us for our Social / Supervised sessions.
I'll usually have an experienced and friendly bridge player on hand to
offer tips, suggestions, and help guide your game as much as you'd like.
This is the perfect place to practice if you're learning to play, or if
you just want to relax and enjoy the game in pleasant surroundings. No
partner required -- we'll form partnerships at the game, and rotate in
to the table if need be.
I currently have sessions on the calendar on Thursday evenings at 7:00
p.m., and Saturday mornings at 9:30 a.m.
I have another session ready to start soon on Thursday afternoons at
12:00 p.m. My hope is that the Thursday afternoon game will provide
practice play for students, and grow into a regular full bridge game for
novice players.
*Here's an offer*: If you have a small group of friends, and you'd like
to use the bridge club for some social bridge, we can usually do that!
Drop me a note and we'll arrange a time.
(I mentioned the Thursday afternoon game in a previous newsletter, but
there aren't yet enough players eager to come play on Thursday
afternoons. If you're just waiting for the right moment -- drop me a
note and we'll work on getting some games together!)
Bridge Library
Drop by the club soon and see the library of old and new bridge books on

All about those doubles!
I have an excellent *course starting up* for five sessions this coming
Saturday morning, Feb. 25, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.: /Improving Your Judgment -
Doubles/ from Audrey Grant and David Lindop.
I recommend this class for intermediate players. This is where you can
learn how experts will use doubles in interesting and marginal
situations -- and, more importantly, when they don't.

Following IYJ-Doubles will be /Two Over One Game Forcing/ for six weeks.

Free novice game this Tuesday evening
The Monday evening novice game is now the Tuesday evening novice game.
We're kicking off the festivities with a free game on Tuesday, Feb. 21.
Game time is 7:00 p.m., and we're always finished by 9:30 (if not a bit
sooner!).
I have lots of friendly partners available. :)
Last Wednesday for Pizza and Educational Foundation points
This coming Wednesday, Feb. 22, will be our last (for the moment) pizza
party, and last opportunity for the big points available.
Our games in February help support the Educational Foundation. And the
games pay 63% of a sectional rating!
We look to have a good game shaping up this Wednesday already. Drop me a
note to reserve your seat, or sign up on RSVPBridge
<https://rsvpbridge.com>.
New at the bridge club
I've just added some nice face clocks to the walls, so we can always see
the time of day (as well as the round timer!).
There's a bookshelf on the way that will be going in the classroom. I'm
going to be populating it with many shelf-feet of bridge books, new and
old. I'll also have several years of /Bridge World/ magazine to peruse.
If you have bridge books you'd like to add to the collection, bring 'em in!
The iced tea dispenser will change when the "sweet tea" side runs out
(soon). I'm going to have lemonade on one side, and unsweet iced tea on
the other. Perfect for Arnold Palmers. :)
I have *two great classes starting up* this week at the club:
On Wednesday evenings, /Bridge Basics 2 - Competitive Bidding/ already
has 5-1/2 tables.
On Thursday mornings, I'm starting a new series of Bridge Basics 1, 2,
and 3, from 9:00 - 11:00. Four tables are signed up, and there are
likely to be a few more students.
I'm planning to offer a new short novice game on Thursdays at noon. It
may take a while to get a few players, but it already sounds like it
will be fairly popular.
The future looks bright for face-to-face bridge. It will take a while to
reboot bridge, but I have time. :)

Thursday morning Bridge Basics
I love being able to offer classes on evenings and weekends that are
accessible to working folks.
But a lot of us want classes and games during the weekdays! No driving
at night required, no conflicts with weekend activities.
Starting *Thursday, February 23*, I'll be offering all three of the
acclaimed *Bridge Basics courses from Audrey Grant*: /Introduction/,
/Competitive Bidding/, and /Popular Conventions/. Each course meets for
six weeks at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday mornings.
Best of all, we get to enjoy the beautiful Pasadena Bridge Club, with
free parking, comfortable chairs, that great view of Mt. Wilson, fresh
coffee, and plenty of snacks on hand.
If you've been waiting for this announcement and your opportunity to
learn bridge or improve your game, pass the word on to your friends and
bring them with you to class!
Come try the first class of /Bridge Basics 1 - An Introduction/ on
Thursday February 23 at 9:00 a.m. *free with no obligation*. If you like
it and decide to stay, you can buy in for the rest of the series after
the first class.
Course fees for the three classes are $91 for Bridge Basics 1, and $135
each for Bridge Basics 2 and 3. To save your seat, just*reply to this
email*.
Thursday afternoon novice game
Along with the morning classes, starting February 23 I'm offering a
novice bridge game on *Thursday afternoons at 12:00 noon*. Each game
will last about two hours and fifteen minutes or so. We'll play 14 or 15
hands of bridge, and masterpoints will be awarded!
This is a game for students and new players. This will be your chance to
practice and learn all the skills you need to play bridge in clubs and
tournaments all over the world.
(Can't play on Thursday afternoons? Join us for our evening novice game,
currently on Monday evenings!)
More classes for all levels
Each of my class sessions will be rotating on to the next course in the
sequence in late February or early March. (The *Defense *class is truly
powerful.)

Monday Evenings are special
The Monday evening game is the one where *new bridge players* come to
learn and practice playing bridge the way we do at clubs and tournaments.
In 2017, I created the *BridgeMojo *game for Monday evenings. I rented a
Masonic hall in San Marino, and set up tables. The game ran for a year,
and continued at the San Marino Center next to the library.
It was a place for new players to get accustomed to *how duplicate
bridge works*. Learn how to keep score; pick up all the little details
involved in formal bridge tournaments. Get started with the right habits.
We played 14 hands on those Monday evening. It was a quick two hours of
bridge. After the game I would have a topic on the laws of bridge, a
play or defense tip, or other things you need to know whether you're
playing in a weekly club game or a national championship.
Let's do that again. It's just us! Come meet an old or new partner and
join us for a real bridge game. This could be the night where someone
earns their first masterpoints.
Drop me a note and let me know if you'd like to play! I'll find you a
partner if you need one. /We only need 12 players for a game!/
This is the game to do it. Play joyfully and fearlessly!
Play bridge fearlessly!
Best regards,
Mojo, Jane, Zach
